UCPEA employees (University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association) voted overwhelmingly to have their contract renegotiated rather than re-submit their contract to the legislature.
UCPEA employees and UConn ratified a contract agreement and submitted it to the General Assembly in early February. 2016. The 5-year agreement called for moving from a 35hr workweek to a 40hr workweek as well as wage increases of 2%, 1%, 1%, 1%, and 1% .
This contract became a political tug-of-war in the General Assembly with various misconceptions and rumors that didn't properly represent the agreement. There was deep divide among legislators as to whether the agreement should pass.or be subjected to a vote. Ultimately, UConn and UCPEA decided to remove the contract from consideration as there were some "technical" issues with the way the "Supercedence" clause was written.
On March 9, employees of UCPEA took a vote to renegotiate the contract with UConn rather than re-submit a contract that had garnered such scutiny.
The contract will undergo further negotiations most likely centering on the increase in hours (which is an expense the legislature doesn't want to see) and more than likely negotiations around the "bonus" structure created for the employees (which was a meager half percent of salary). Most likely, any re-negoatiated UCPEA contract will not be re-submitted to the legislature this session.
